Shutter Care Guide

Shutters are designed to be low-maintenance, but a little bit of simple care will keep them looking their best for years. This guide walks you through the basics of day-to-day cleaning, how to deal with marks, and what to avoid so you don’t damage the finish. Whether your shutters are in a living room, bedroom, kitchen or a PVC set in the bathroom, the same straightforward tips apply. Use this page as a quick reference whenever you want to give your shutters a refresh.

Everyday cleaning

Your shutters don’t need much looking after. A quick dust every week or so is usually enough. Use a soft cloth, feather duster, or a clean microfibre cloth, and run it along each slat, the frame, and the tilt rod. Close the slats one way, dust, then tilt them the other way to catch anything you’ve missed.

What to avoid

To protect the finish, avoid:

  • Harsh chemicals or bleach

  • Abrasive pads or scourers

  • Solvent-based cleaners

  • Steam cleaners or pressure washers

These can damage the paint or material and shorten the life of the shutters.

Moisture and condensation

In kitchens, bathrooms, and other humid rooms, try to keep the space well ventilated. Open a window or use an extractor fan where possible. Bathroom shutters are made from PVC, which is designed to cope with moisture, but it’s still a good idea to wipe away any condensation with a dry cloth so it doesn’t sit on the surface for long periods.

Hinges and moving parts

From time to time, check that panels open and close smoothly and that tilt rods move freely. If a hinge or screw ever feels a little loose, it can usually be tightened gently with a screwdriver. Avoid using oil or spray lubricants on visible parts, as these can mark the finish.
